
Dennis Carlberg
Affiliated Faculty, IGS; BU Chief Sustainability Officer and Associate Vice President for Climate Action
Dennis Carlberg, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, affiliated faculty with the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) and Associate Vice President for Sustainability, is an architect with over 25 years of experience. In January 2009, Carlberg joined Boston University as its first Sustainability Director. Carlberg is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth & Environment and faculty/advisor for the Earth House, a living learning community. Prior to joining BU, Dennis was a principal at Arrowstreet, a Boston-based architectural firm where he focused on sustainable design. He began his career at the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Lab) conducting daylighting research to reduce building energy consumption and improve the indoor environment.
Dennis co-chairs the Boston Green Ribbon Commission Higher Ed Working Group Executive Committee and is the University’s Liaison to the University Climate Change Coalition. He founded and co-chaired ULI Boston’s Climate Resilience Committee and served on many sustainability committees for ULI and Technical Advisory Groups for the City of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and national organizations.
At BU he serves on the Antiracism Working Group and co-chairs its Sustainability Subcommittee. He served on BU’s Climate Action Plan Task Force and the advisory board of City Planning and Urban Affairs, and led the Sustainable Operations section of the BU Strategic Plan.
Carlberg received his Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
