Have a Heart

Subject Area

Human Body Systems and Health
Age or Grade

7th Grade
Mass DOE Content Standard

Identify the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, protection from disease, and movement, control, and coordination) and describe ways that these syst
ems interact with each other
.

Prerequisite knowledge/skills

Basic anatomy, bar graphs
Description of New Content

Students will learn about parts of the heart.
Goals

Students will label the parts of the heart and relate them to a model.
Students will understand the effects of exercise on heart rate.

Materials Needed Optional computer for interactive hearts.
Wide mouth jar (plastic), balloons, skewer, two flexible straws, scissors, tub or pail to collect water spills (per group or can be done as a demo or work stations)

Procedure

Opener:

Have the class brainstorm about the roles of pumps and vavles.  What pumps and valves do they know about from day to day life?  Try to guide them to the fact that the heart is a pump and explain it has vavles to regulate flow.

Exploration:
Students will use the following  worksheet to move through several stations set up to investigate the heart.

Station 1: Student can use their book or an interacitve website (ex. Science Museum of Minnesota or Discovery Science Connection) to label the various parts of the heart and color oxygenated blood flow red and deoxygenated blood blue.

Station 2: Option 1. Students will build a model of the heart.  Option 2.  Student will explore a pre-built model of a heart.  (Directions for model)2 This model will reinforce the role of the heart as a pump and the role of its valves.

Station 3: Students will try various exercises, monitor pulse, and create a graphs of the pulse rate for each..

Closer:
Review worksheet with class.  Ask student to help fill in a blank overhead of the parts of the heart.  Ask how the model relates to the hearts and what effects they saw with exercise.

Evaluation

Closer can serve as a partial evaluation to see which groups can sucessfully name the parts.  Worksheet can be collected and graded.

Extensions

This lesson works well with the lung lesson.  Students can use this worksheet to compare the two activities.
The Science Museum of Minnesota  has several other lessons on both heart and lungs.
Discovery Science Connection (paid site) has many heart activities and a virtual lab on heart health.
