Quizzes and final quiz

CH102 General Chemistry, Spring 2024

The Final quiz will be on Wednesday, 8 May 2024, 6-8pm. All students in CH102 are required to take the final quiz.

It will not be given at any other time, so please make end-of-semester plans accordingly.


Quizzes in CH102/116 are given on Monday evenings at 6:30pm (except Quiz #2 that will be on Wednesday 21 February 2024 at 6:30, which is Monday's schedule at BU), and they will typically last 75 minutes (depending on the quiz - exact lengths will be announced). Quizzes are only given at the scheduled day and time. There will be a total of six quizzes, including the required final quiz. Details about the quizzes and final are in the syllabus.

Your are required to abide by the following quiz and exam regulations:

Boston University treats cheating with zero tolerance. All students in CH102 are expected to maintain the highest degree of academic integrity, and you are responsible for being aware of the contents of the Boston University Academic Conduct Code. The consequences of cheating are at a minimum that the score for work on which cheating occurs counts as 0, and all instances of misconduct will be reported to the Dean’s office.

For quizzes you are ONLY permitted the use of:

  • The quiz paper, which will include a copy of the Information Sheet;
  • Your Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator (this is the only calculator approved by the department for use in CH101/102; you are not permitted to bring the cover to the calculator to the quiz room) - No other electronic devices may be used; and
  • writing implements (quizzes must be taken in pencil or blue/black ink - and the writing must be dark enough to scan well).

All electronic communication is forbidden during quizzes, and all communication devices (including watches) must be placed in airplane mode and stowed away in bags at the front of the room. Use of any other materials, resources, or people is cheating and a violation of the academic conduct code. All work submitted in CH102 must be your work alone.

All work must be done on the quiz. Answers without supporting work will not receive credit. Points may be deducted for incorrect significant figures or units. All work, including units, must be shown to receive any credit.

The quizzes will be scanned and uploaded to GradeScope for grading by the course staff. In order for the quiz to be properly assigned to you, please make sure to write your name in the box provided, and your BU ID number on the top of ALL pages of the quiz. Please write legibly, in block letters (not cursive). Please use blue or black ink or pencil only – make sure that all marks are dark and readable.

Quizzes are graded and promptly returned to the class. As such, quizzes can only be taken at the scheduled day and time. Please make any plans, including travel, accordingly.

2 *Wed Feb 21 Quiz #2 is is based on all of the material in the course up to and including the following sections of chapter 17 in McQuarrie 4e: 17-1, 17-2, 17-3, 17-4, and 17-8 (except for the sections and topics explicitly listed as skipped in the schedule). The rest of chapter 17 (sections 17-5, 17-6, 17-7, and 17-9) will be included in the material for Quiz #3. The homework problems from Chapter 17 have been broken up by quiz on the schedule page.

3 Mar 4 Quiz #3 is is based on all of the material in the course up to and including the following sections of chapter 19 in McQuarrie 4e: 19-1, 19-2, 19-3, and 19-9 (except for the sections and topics explicitly listed as skipped in the schedule). The rest of chapter 19 (sections 19-4 to 19-8) will be included in the material for Quiz #4. The homework problems from Chapter 19 have been broken up by quiz on the schedule page.

4 Mar 25 Quiz #4 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including weak acids (section 20-7). The remainder of chapter 20 (material from sections 20-9, 20-10, and 20-11) will be included on Quiz #5. The homework problems from Chapter 20 have been broken up by quiz on the schedule page.

5 Apr 8 Quiz #5 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including section 23-5 in McQuarrie. The remainder of chapter 23 will be included on Quiz #6 (during the finals period). Note: the homework problems from Chapter 23 have been broken up by quiz on the schedule page, and the questions on discussion worksheet 11 also represent the topics from chapter 23 that are included on quiz 5.

Final quiz, Wednesday 8 May 2024 at 6pm.

The final quiz will be a combination of new material since quiz 5 (roughly 75% of the quiz) and cumulative content (roughly 25% of the quiz). The final quiz will last 2 hours, starting at 6pm.

All students are required to take the final quiz (it may not be dropped).

  • Students who have submitted DAS accommodations letters to ch102-questions@bu.edu take the quiz (starting at 6pm) in the same room as quiz 1 (they received this information by email before quiz 1).
