CH101 General Chemistry, Fall 2023

The date of the Final Quiz will be on Tuesday, 19 December 2023 at 6pm.

It will not be given at any other time, so please make end-of-semester plans accordingly.


Quizzes in CH101 are given on Monday evenings at 6:30pm, and they will typically last 75 minutes (depending on the quiz - exact lengths will be announced). Quizzes are only given at the scheduled day and time. There will be a total of six quizzes. Details about the quizzes and final are in the syllabus.

Your are required to abide by the following quiz and exam regulations:

Boston University treats cheating with zero tolerance. All students in CH101 are expected to maintain the highest degree of academic integrity, and you are responsible for being aware of the contents of the Boston University Academic Conduct Code. The consequences of cheating are at a minimum that the score for work on which cheating occurs counts as 0, and all instances of misconduct will be reported to the Dean’s office.

For quizzes you are ONLY permitted the use of:

  • The quiz paper, which will include a copy of the Information Sheet;
  • Your Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator (this is the only calculator approved by the department for use in CH101/102; you are not permitted to bring the cover to the calculator to the quiz room) - No other electronic devices may be used; and
  • writing implements (quizzes must be taken in pencil or blue/black ink - and the writing must be dark enough to scan well).

All electronic communication is forbidden during quizzes, and all communication devices (including watches) must be placed in airplane mode and stowed away in bags at the front of the room. Use of any other materials, resources, or people is cheating and a violation of the academic conduct code. All work submitted in CH101 must be your work alone.

All work must be done on the quiz. Answers without supporting work will not receive credit. Points may be deducted for incorrect significant figures or units. All work, including units, must be shown to receive any credit.

The quizzes will be scanned and uploaded to GradeScope for grading by the course staff. In order for the quiz to be properly assigned to you, please make sure to write your name in the box provided, and your BU ID number on the top of ALL pages of the quiz. Please write legibly, in block letters (not cursive). Please use blue or black ink or pencil only – make sure that all marks are dark and readable.

Quizzes are graded and promptly returned to the class. As such, quizzes can only be taken at the scheduled day and time. Please make any plans, including travel, accordingly.

1 Sept 18 Quiz #1 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including section 4.3 of chapter 4 in McQuarrie 4e (except for the sections and topics explicitly listed as skipped in the schedule).

All students are required to complete the "Preparation for Quiz 1" assignment posted on Gradescope before Friday (15 September 2023) at 7pm (you can access Gradescope from the side navigation bar in Blackboard) Please make sure to review the important quiz regulations (posted above).

In the future, these details will be posted on Wednesday or Thursday before the quiz on this page.
2 Oct 2 Quiz #2 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including section 5-8 of chapter 5 in McQuarrie 4e (except for the sections and topics explicitly listed as skipped in the schedule). The remainder of chapter 5 will be included on Quiz 3. The relevant homework problems from chapter 5 have been separated in the schedule.

3 Oct 23 Quiz #3 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including section 9-4 of chapter 9 in McQuarrie 4e (i.e., up to and including diatomic molecular orbital theory). The remainder of chapter 9 will be included on Quiz 4. The relevant homework problems from chapter 9 have been separated in the schedule.

4 Nov 6 Quiz #4 is based on Quiz #4 is based on all of the material in the course up to and including the material on precipitation reactions, including doing calculations problems on precipitation (''Limiting reagents with concentrations'' in the pathway through chapters 10-12). Sections and topics explicitly listed as skipped in the schedule are not included. The material starting with ''molecular solutes...'' in the pathway through chapters 10-12 will be included on Quiz 5.

Final quiz, Tuesday, 19 December 2023 at 6pm. The final quiz will be 2 hours in length, and it is based on everything that was covered this semester. Locations were sent by email to the students who indicated that they were planning to take the final quiz.

The final quiz is held in the following locations (these are NOT the same as the previous quizzes) starting at 6:30 pm. Copies have only been made for students that indicated that they will likely take the final quiz.
