Lei Guo is a Core Faculty Member of the Global China Initiative at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center and an Associate Professor of Emerging Media Studies at Boston University. She was a founding faculty member at the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences at Boston University. Her research focuses on the development of media effects theories, computational social science methodologies and emerging media and democracy in the United States and China. Recently, Dr. Guo has been leading a research project that examines international news coverage of COVID-19 and the impacts.
Dr. Guo has published over 30 research papers in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Communication, Communication Research and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. Her co-edited book ‘The Power of Information Networks: New Directions for Agenda Setting’ (2015, Routledge) introduces a new theoretical perspective to understand media effects in this emerging media landscape.
Dr. Guo won many awards for her scholarship, including the Google Research Award, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly Outstanding Article Award and top faculty paper awards at major communication conferences. Her collaborative research with computer scientists leads to a $1 million NSF grant to address emerging media representation and effects.
