Book Talk: Racial Capitalism and International Tax Law: The Story of Global Jim Crow

  • Starts12:45 pm on Monday, November 3, 2025
  • Ends2:00 pm on Monday, November 3, 2025

A new book by Global Economic Governance Initiative Core Faculty Member Steven Dean, "Racial Capitalism and International Tax Law: The Story of Global Jim Crow" (Oxford University Press), explores how tax policy functions as both a tool of economic power and a mechanism that can entrench—or challenge—racial hierarchies across nations. Praised by Ibram X. Kendi as “a fascinating and greatly needed book,” Dean’s work invites a critical rethinking of how taxation, development and equity intersect in an interconnected world. The book’s insights will be the focus of an upcoming discussion featuring BU’s own Professor Koritha Mitchell and Dean Scott Taylor, joined by Professor Attiya Waris from the United Nations and the University of Nairobi. Together, they will unpack how international tax structures have historically perpetuated racialized patterns of wealth extraction and how more just systems might be envisioned moving forward.

On Monday, November 3, from 12:45 to 2:00PM, join the Boston University School of Law and the Boston University Global Development Policy Center for a conversation on "Racial Capitalism and International Tax Law: The Story of Global Jim Crow" and the urgent need to rethink global tax governance through the lens of racial and economic justice.

Lunch will be available starting at 12:30pm.
