Family Medicine Medical Interviewing

The purpose of this course is to improve understanding o f the concepts underlying an effective medical interview.

Course Objectives:

Become familiar with concepts of medical interviewing including:

  • Initiating the interview, developing rapport
  • Observing patient interaction
  • Eliciting information
  • Maintaining control and focus in the interview
  • Bringing closure

Be aware of a wide range of different questioning techniques, and how and when to use them in the medical interview

Be able to state the cardinal features that define a symptom in the medical interview

Be attentive to the affective state of the patient, and to non-verbal interview cues.

Develop skills in regulating the flow of the interview, including the pace, transitions, and closure of the interview.
