First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP)

First-Year Volunteer Application is now live!!

In order to facilitate and prepare for the influx of First-Year students, we strongly suggest that you apply before August 1.

About FYSOP

Mission: The First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) serves to welcome Boston University’s incoming class with a week of community engagement, service, and education before classes begin. With a small group of other new students and returning student leaders, participants will build connections with Boston, its neighborhoods and people, community organizations, our campus, and each other.

Vision: FYSOP aims to provide first-year students with the education, connections, and resources to responsibly navigate the transitions both to Boston University and through a pandemic-affected world. Through a week of service, reflection, and community building, students will gain a foundation for active citizenship, allowing them to develop as leaders, mentors, and proactive individuals beyond the program.

  • The program intends for participants to:
    • Utilize technology to increase our outreach and accessibility
    • Encourage individuals to always be intentional with the language they use to discuss their experiences with service, community partners, and focus areas
    • Identify and understand the intersections between identities and between social justice topics
    • Reimagine community service in a post-COVID world

FYSOP 2021 will take place August 23 – 27. First-year Volunteer applications are now live, and the deadline to apply is August 1.  More details will be released in the coming week.

FYSOP 2021 is currently being developed and will be open to all new Fall undergraduates (incoming freshmen and transfer students) at Boston University, as well as rising CGS sophomore students who matriculated January 2021. Further updates will continually be posted here.

FYSOP Museum (2020)

Even though FYSOP was a virtual experience last year, that doesn’t mean we strayed from our traditions! The FYSOP Museum is a collection of research, community spotlights, and personal anecdotes that is designed to help students educate themselves on the many different facets of Boston’s communities and how these intersect with the social justice areas we explore during our services.
