Professor, ENG (ECE), Associate Chair of Doctoral Programs, ENG (ECE)
Vivek K Goyal is Professor and Associate Chair of Doctoral Programs for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Boston University College of Engineering. He received degrees from the University of Iowa (BS 1993; BSE 1993) and the University of California, Berkeley (MS 1995; PhD 1998). He was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs (1998-2001), Senior Research Engineer at Digital Fountain (2001-2003), Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (2003), faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2004-2013), Adviser to 3dim Tech (2013-2014), and with Nest Labs, a division of Google, to integrate technology from 3dim Tech (2014-2016).
Goyal specializes in signal processing, with a recent emphasis on computational imaging, especially the exploitation of efficient information representations and the development of new imaging modalities that are dependent on computation. Goyal’s research interests include computational imaging, information representation, statistical signal processing, quantization, and human decision making and perception.
Goyal has published more than 200 papers in these areas and co-authored a textbook (Foundations of Signal Processing, Cambridge University Press 2014). He serves on the editorial boards of IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, and Foundations and Trends in Signal Processing. He co-chaired the SPIE Wavelets & Sparsity conference series 2006 to 2016. He has been a plenary speaker at various international conferences, including the IEEE Data Compression Conference in 2009, the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing in 2009, and the 20th European Signal Processing Conference in 2012. He served as an IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Distinguished Lecturer 2017-2018.
He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2002 IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Magazine Award, 2017 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award, 2019 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award, 2021 IEEE SPS Outstanding Editorial Board Member, and the Best Paper Award of the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing. Additionally, work he supervised has received seven student best paper awards or poster awards, seven thesis awards, including the 2021 IEEE SPS Best PhD Dissertation Award, and a CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Honorable Mention.
Goyal was named a 2022 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and of Optica (formerly OSA). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi.
