Dr. Eran Simhon: Lunch & Learn Speaker
by Karen Bogle
CISE and BU’s Corporate Relations cohosted an Industry Scholars Lunch & Learn session on April 11 featuring Dr. Eran Simhon, Senior Research Scientist, Clinical Informatics Solutions and Services, Philips Research North America who came to campus to speak to PhD and postdoctoral students about Population Health Management – from data to actionable insights. In addition to his research presentation, Dr. Simhon, a Systems Engineering BU PhD graduate, shared his own personal career journey from academia into industry and responded to students’ questions.
As Dr. Simhon explained, in recent years, the business model of US healthcare system is shifting from fee-for-service to fee-for-value. He believes this is a promising change that will improve both clinical and financial outcomes, but requires healthcare providers to become pro-active in managing the health of their population. Population Health Management (PHM) tools have been developed for this purpose. PHM is the aggregation of patient data across multiple health information technology resources and the analysis of that data into a single, actionable patient record.
In this talk, Dr. Simhon discussed how PHM tools can be used to improve medical outcomes and how we, in Philips Research, use machine learning and optimization methods to enrich PHM tools. He also discussed how augmenting medical data with socioeconomic and behavioral data can be used to improve healthcare outcomes.
Dr. Simhon received his B.Sc and M.Sc in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology in 2006 and 2012, respectively and his PhD in Systems Engineering from Boston University in 2016. He also has four years of experience as a supply chain engineer in the semiconductor industry. His research interests include applying machine learning, queueing theory and optimization methods in the health care domain.
