Ivanna Corzo was studying Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University and was on track to graduate in 2019. Corzo moved with her family from Bogota, Columbia to Miami, FL when she was only four years old. She first considered a degree in engineering while taking biology courses in community college. She was thinking of becoming an MD, when her sister steered her towards Engineering instead. Corzo likes the notion of “…bringing ideas to life.”
Summer 2018, Corzo participated as a REM participant in the Bifano Lab. Although she initially felt out of her comfort zone in the lab, she quickly adapted to the laboratory environment and processes. She is thankful for her mentor Huate Li and her PI, Dr.Bifano, who inspires and motivates her.
Corzo also has an entrepreneurial spirit. She has written a children’s book that is meant to inspire young women to go into the STEM field. She also planned to start her own company someday; one that hopefully creates new biodegradable materials.
Throughout her time in Boston, Corzo enjoyed the vibrant community around the city, which she describes as “…alive and charming.” She had some memorable adventures biking around the city and even found a spot to eat genuine Colombian Arepas.
