Sharvari Apte

Sharvari worked in the Chen Lab with graduate student mentor, Xining Gao. During this project, her lab partnered with Harvard Medical. Sharvari did a lot of cell work with cardiomyocytes and aimed to create a 2D assay that normalizes the heart cells in a high-throughput manner.   Watch below to hear more about Sharvari’s REU experience!

Yenifer Lemus Cardoza

Yenifer worked in White Lab with mentor Oliver McRae. She worked on modeling and control of stainless-steel syringe liquid delivery. The aim of the study is to increase knowledge and understanding of flow rates of highly viscous liquids such as blood from stainless-steel syringe pump systems.   Learn more about Yenifer’s REU experience!

Christopher Carlton

Christopher participated in the RET program for multiple years. He worked with both Sandra Rodegher and the Nordsletten Lab. He teachers middle and elementary aged learners at Global Tech Academy. He is currently pursing his doctoral degree in education so that he can further impact STEM learners.

Christian Cox

In the summer of 2022, Christian Cox participated in Dr. Darryl Dickerson’s Lab. During this time he assisted in tensile and indention testing of heart tissue. He also learned excel add-on “GCODE” to research and designate parameters for the lab’s 3D electro writing printer to ensure computer designs and actual prints are the same dimensions. […]

Deidre Crockett

In the summer of 2022, Deidre participated in the Baker lab with mentor Samuel J. DePalma. She verified the viability and reliability of a new macro-scale 3D in vitro heart tissue model∙

Timothy Forrest

Timothy Forrest worked in the Forrest Lab while a student at University High School Academy. He is now on a pre-law track, majoring in English and minoring in Spanish at the University of Michigan.

Anwar Haloui

In 2022, Anwar Haloui worked in the Bishop lab with graduate student mentor, Noelle Pierce. He worked on patterning cardiomyocytes on a 2-D layer of gold. More specifically, he designed and manufactured templets for the cardiomyocytes to assess adhesion to edges and filets.   Hear more about Anwar’s summer experience!

Diego Hernandez

Diego Hernandez worked in the Forrest Lab while a student at Cass Technical High School. He is now an Electrical Engineering major at the University of Michigan.

Marva Lawrence

Marva worked in the Bifano Lab alongside graduate student mentor, Ruifeng Hu. Some of her tasks included creating PDMS devices, ensuring that the heart tissue can stay on the device’s posts, and taking side view images of them. She also communicated with Florida International University since they test the stiffness of the devices.   Learn more […]

Ishmael Ortiz-Stewart

In the summer of 2022, Ishmael Ortiz-Stewart completed his REU experience in Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy’s Lab at Florida International University. Since completing his research experience, he went on to earn a BS in Biomedical/Medical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.
