Amanda Dillingham

Amanda spent six weeks of the summer working on developing lessons for her BioTech course at East Boston High School and later on invited members of Chris Chen’s laboratory to her classroom for BU’s NSF RET’s piloted “case-study curriculum”.

Rafaela Frota

In 2019, Rafaela worked across the Chen Lab and Eyckmans Lab focusing on better understanding Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a heart condition affecting up to 500,000 in the United States and contributing to a leading cause of sudden death.

Anwar Haloui

In 2022, Anwar Haloui worked in the Bishop lab with graduate student mentor, Noelle Pierce. He worked on patterning cardiomyocytes on a 2-D layer of gold. More specifically, he designed and manufactured templets for the cardiomyocytes to assess adhesion to edges and filets.   Hear more about Anwar’s summer experience!

Lea Hebert

Lea worked in the Tissue Microfabrication Lab under PI Christopher Chen on post-heart attack healing of the heart through engraftments. The topic of her project was “Characterization of Cardiomyocyte Integration within an In Vitro Engraftment Platform”. Learn more about Lea and her work below!

Gabriel Hubbard

Under the supervision of Helen Fawcett, Gabriel Hubbard worked with Jourdan Watson on building and programming a robotic hand. In addition using his knowledge of electrical engineering and circuitry to build the robotic hand, Gabriel helped developed robotic hand-focused curriculum for use in middle and high school classrooms. Learn more about Gabriel and his work […]

Akhila Johny

Akhila worked in the Chen Lab controlling mass transport in organ-on-a-chip devices. She created a profusion system to feed media or nutrients to the cells in the device over a longer period of time. Learn more about Akhila’s REU experience below!

Charles Knight

Charles worked on the Lab on a Chip project that is working on microchips that will eventually be used to help repair heart tissue. He went on to work as a computer scientist at the US Department of Defense. Learn more about Charles and his work below!

Babajide Koleoso

Babajide worked on building a scaffold that would house heart cells to make the cells communicate more effectively and contract cohesively. Learn more about BJ and his work below!

Marva Lawrence

Marva worked in the Bifano Lab alongside graduate student mentor, Ruifeng Hu. Some of her tasks included creating PDMS devices, ensuring that the heart tissue can stay on the device’s posts, and taking side view images of them. She also communicated with Florida International University since they test the stiffness of the devices.   Learn more […]

Sebastian Martinez

Sebastian worked on “High Throughput Screening System for Engineered Heart Tissues” in the Bifano lab. The project aims to analyze the contractile force of engineered heart tissue. Learn more about Sebastian and his work below!
