Message from President Brown about a Tragedy

To Members of the Boston University Community:
As most of you will have heard, one of our graduate students was shot and killed early this morning — shortly after midnight — at 139 Allston Street, approximately one mile west of our campus. Boston Police and Boston University Police are investigating the circumstances of this dreadful crime, which appears to be an isolated incident.

We are, first of all, deeply saddened at the loss of one of our students. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and friends. And we are outraged at this crime.

We are still learning details about this. Obviously this crime raises understandable concerns about safety and security. While this murder occurred outside our campus area, we want to assure you that we work continuously with the City of Boston to address safety and security concerns in the neighborhoods that surround our campus. We are already working with Boston Police to increase patrols in the neighborhood where this crime took place.

We urge anyone who so wishes to make use of our counseling resources. Students are welcome to call crisis intervention counselors at 617-353-3569 or religious life staff at 617-353-3560.

Finally, as we learn more, we will share new information with the community through BU Today.

Yours sincerely,
