Howard Gotlieb
Dear Friends,
It is with deep sadness and regret we wish to inform you of the passing of our friend and colleague Howard Gotlieb, resulting from complications following surgery.
As you know, Howard spent his life collecting the papers of public and historic figures. During his forty-three years at Boston University, he amassed a collection valued at over sixty-five million dollars. He accomplished his dream of creating comprehensive contemporary archives and of documenting the history of the twentieth century. As a result of his great foresight, the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center is a colossal achievement, begun by a determined man with a singular mission to collect. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy for future generations to utilize and enjoy.
Howard Gotlieb treasured his dealings with all those connected to the Center. He derived just as much pleasure and satisfaction from the relationships he developed over the years as he did from collecting manuscripts with intrinsic historic research value. He established the unique nature of the Center by balancing the professional and the personal elements of collecting.
A great friend, known for his kindness and generosity, Howard Gotlieb will be sorely missed by all of us at Boston University and around the world.
With best wishes,
Sincerely,
Robert A. Brown
President
