Hoax Call, Campus Emergency
November 18, 2016
Dear Friends,
As many will have seen in news reports, the emergency situation in the area of 771 Commonwealth Avenue (Mugar Library and George Sherman Union) has been resolved. The Boston Police have issued an all-clear notification and there are no reported injuries.
The emergency response was prompted by a threatening phone call to the Boston University Police Department. Although an investigation is ongoing, we believe that the call came from an international location and was a hoax. The nature of the threat required that the buildings be immediately closed and searched by the police. We are returning as quickly as possible to normal operations.
Please go to BU Today for additional reporting and updates. We also encourage students to update their parents, who may have picked up on early news reports and are likely concerned.
We are very grateful to Boston Police Commissioner Evans and the Boston Police, Fire, and EMS Departments, the Boston University Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police for the swift and coordinated response that ensured the safety of our community and made possible an early (and reassuring) resolution of this situation.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Brown
President
