University reorganizes WBUR Boston University recently reorganized the administration of WBUR, the National Public Radio station it owns and operates, based on the recommendations of an outside management advisory firm. Grant Thornton was asked to review all aspects of the station’s business and management operations except programming, says Peter Fiedler, BU vice president for administrative services and the station’s acting general manager. The firm completed its work in March. Among its recommendations was streamlining the senior management team to improve coordination and communication. To that end, Corey Lewis, previously WBUR’s director of corporate support, has been named station manager. The station’s underwriting, development, and marketing areas now report to Lewis, who is responsible for the growth and financial strength of the station. In addition to Lewis, three other senior staffers will report directly to the general manager: Sam Fleming, director of news and programming, Jeff Hutton, director of engineering, and Jean Wong, director of finance. Wong also will oversee human resources and serve as a liaison between WBUR and BU’s Office of Personnel. Among the seven other employees who previously reported directly to the general manager, one has left the station, one has moved to BU, and five have retained their positions but now report to one of four directors. “We have already implemented many of the recommendations of the Grant Thornton report,” says Fiedler. “This reduction of senior staff from 11 to 4 is one more step in that ongoing process. Our goal is to have this station functioning as professionally and efficiently as possible when the new general manager comes on board this fall.” Fiedler also announced that on the report’s recommendation, a customized accounting and fundraising system will be designed to simplify information management functions and operate in coordination with BU’s IS system. |
