Mercurio announces administrative restructuring, creation of operations unit Executive Vice President Joseph Mercurio has reorganized a core portion of the University’s central administration, in part to “group functional areas with similar missions more closely together,” and to achieve “greater integration between the Charles River and Medical Campus support functions.” The realignment, announced in a May 24 letter to administrators and effective June 1, includes the hiring of new Vice President Gary W. Nicksa, the promotion of Peter Fiedler to vice president, and the promotion of Peter Smokowski to associate vice president. Mercurio consulted with numerous BU administrators on the changes over the past two months, he said. Nicksa, a certified public accountant with more than 25 years of experience, joins BU in the newly created position of vice president for operations. He has served as chief financial officer of Newbury College, in Brookline, Mass., and Buckingham Browne and Nichols School, in Cambridge, Mass. He also has extensive experience in the health insurance industry, as senior vice president of The Chickering Group, an Aetna Company, and in real estate development. Administrators reporting to Nicksa include:
Kevin Tuohey, executive director of BU Medical Center operations and public safety, who continues to oversee the shared services between the Charles River and Medical Campuses, and the Office of Corporate Communications. As part of Mercurio’s administrative restructuring, Fiedler (COM’77), previously an assistant vice president, is promoted to vice president for administrative services. He now is responsible for the Office of Human Resources, which, under the direction of Associate Vice President Manuel Monteiro, in addition to all of the existing Personnel Office activities, has been expanded to include the Office of Equal Opportunity, the Faculty/Staff Assistance Office, the Family Resource Center, the Occupational Health Center, the Children’s Center, and the BU Medical Center Office of Personnel. Fiedler also now oversees Student Health Services, the BU Police Department, University Mail Services for both campuses, sports broadcasting, information systems and planning for administrative units reporting to the executive vice president, and WBUR, where he is currently acting general manager. Two departments previously reporting to Fiedler, Publications Production and Media Services, now report to Stephen Burgay, vice president for marketing and communications, thus grouping public relations and media-related activities under his supervision. In addition, Smokowski, who previously was assistant vice president, is promoted to associate vice president for administration. He reports to the executive vice president and oversees Agganis Arena, the Fitness and Recreation Center, Barnes and Noble at BU, the Office of Purchasing Services for both campuses, and BU’s interest in the Hotel Commonwealth. Peter Cusato serves as vice president for auxiliary business affairs. He continues to oversee Student Housing, Dining Services, Conference Services, Parking Services, Vending Services, Risk Management, and convenience store operations. In addition, he oversees campus transportation issues, which includes representing BU in planning for the commonwealth’s new “urban ring” mass transit system. |
