That’s my spot! A team of electrical engineering undergrads won first prize at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) fifth annual Student Design Contest in early May for creating a cheap and convenient system for locating empty spots in a parking lot. Dubbed iPark, the wireless computerized system designed by (from left) Ido Hochman (ENG’05), Mike Mole (ENG’05), Ken Lopez (ENG’05), and Patrick Ward (ENG’05) would use commercially available digital cameras to locate empty spots and communicate the information to drivers or a parking attendant. The students were advised by Professor W. Clem Karl and Associate Professor Janusz Konrad, of the ENG electrical and computer engineering department, and will share a cash award of $5,000. The contest at Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, N.Y., was cosponsored by RIT and IEEE. Photo by Michael Pastore |
