WBUR wins eight RTNDA awards

WBUR-FM won eight regional awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), New England Region, including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. It is the second time this month that WBUR has dominated an awards process — the station also finished first in seven categories in the Associated Press Boston market awards competition.

WBUR, the BU-owned National Public Radio station, competed in RTNDA’s Radio–Large Market category. The Murrow award entry included material from all of WBUR’s shows. In addition to overall excellence, WBUR won in the following categories:

  • Feature Reporting: “Presidential Kid,” Sean Cole, reporter
  • Continuing Coverage: Election 2004
  • News Documentary: “With This Ring: Pledging Abstinence,” Inside Out documentary unit, Sean Cole, reporter, Anna Bensted, senior producer, George Hicks, engineer
  • News Series: “With This Ring: Pledging Abstinence,” Inside Out documentary unit
  • Newscast: Here and Now
  • Sports Reporting: “Maracana,” Sports magazine Only a Game, Ken Shulman, reporter
  • Use of Sound: “1968,” The Connection, Doug Shugarts, producer

“To receive significant honors from one major news organization is outstanding, but to receive another such group of similar accolades the next week is extraordinary,” says Peter Fiedler, interim general manager of WBUR. “The numerous award entries included material from all our WBUR programs. The results are a tribute to Sam Fleming, our managing director of news and programming, our news director, John Davidow, and all the men and women who have contributed their talents to make WBUR one of the top Public Radio stations in America.”

In the recently announced Associated Press Awards, WBUR was named News Station of the Year. It also took top honors in the categories of Continuing Coverage, Enterprise Reporting, Special Events, Sports Program for Only a Game, and Talk Show for On Point, and shared best Newscast honors with WRKO-AM for Here and Now.

All these regional award-winning entries will be entered into the RTNDA national competition.
