CGS students killed on railroad tracks

An MBTA commuter train traveling inbound from Worcester on the wide swath of tracks west of Case Gymnasium struck and killed two BU students at approximately one a.m. on Wednesday, February 9. Molly Shattuck (CGS’06), a first-year student from Ipswich, Mass., had turned 19 last month, and Andrew Voluck (CGS’05), a second-year student from Blue Bell, Pa., was 20. Both were dead at the scene.

MBTA police investigators are unsure why Shattuck and Voluck were on the tracks, which is not near a rail stop, but no foul play is suspected, says Lydia Rivera, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. No one on the train was injured.

In a public statement issued Wednesday, Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said he was “deeply saddened” by the accident. “Our prayers and our hearts go out to Molly’s and Andrew’s families, friends, and to those who knew Molly and Andrew,” he said. “The Boston University community has suffered a great loss.

“Sadly, this accident reminds us all of the dangers ever present in our daily lives,” Elmore said. “I ask all members of our community to make personal safety their highest priority.”

Chaplains and religious advisors at Marsh Chapel are available to faculty, staff, and students seeking someone to talk to. In addition, students can avail themselves of counseling services at the Student Health Services Mental Health and Counseling Clinic at 881 Commonwealth Ave. Residence directors and others members of the Residence Life staff also are available at campus residences.

“I know this is a shock for our students and their families,” Elmore said. “I encourage students and parents to be in touch with each other. During this time of tragedy I also encourage us all to reach out to each other in sympathy and support.”
