Christine Bonner, director of corporate and foundation relations at the MED development office, won a $200 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble, and Frances Whistler, director of publications at the Editorial Institute, won a dinner cruise for two aboard the Spirit of Boston in the third drawing of BU’s 2004 United Way campaign on October 29. “It’s fantastic!” Whistler says. “This is totally beginner’s luck. I only signed up a couple of weeks ago. Not that I’ve been withholding, but I only arrived in this country in September.” Bonner has been directing her United Way contributions to Shelter, Inc., an organization that supports homeless families in Medford. A craft enthusiast, Bonner often buys craft supplies and donates them to Shelter, Inc., which runs a crafts program for children twice a week. “I’m going to give them one of the $50 gift certificates,” she says. “The craft leader there is always looking for new ideas for crafts for the kids, so she’ll be able to buy books on crafts with the certificate.” The annual United Way fund drive began October 1. Participants who contribute $75 or more ($1.45 a week) are eligible to win incentive prizes, which are being raffled off at drawings every Friday through November 12 and at the University Holiday Party on December 16. The prizes include four first-balcony seats for BU Night at the Pops in May, four tickets to the May 21, 2005, all-University buffet celebration, $200 worth of Terrier Convenience Points, a weekend getaway for two at the Hotel Commonwealth, and a travel package for two to any location in the continental United States. As of October 29, Boston University employees had contributed more than $124,500 to the United Way Campaign, representing 75 percent of BU’s $165,000 campaign goal.
