The Boston University 2003 United Way campaign is drawing to a close, but it's not too late to enter the grand prize drawing to win round-trip tickets for two to any destination in the continental United States, says Marvin Cook, vice president of planning, budgeting, and information and the University's United Way manager. “Employees who contribute $75 or more ($1.45 per week) anytime before the University holiday party on December 18 can still win the package from Garber Travel,” he says, “which includes a $600 gift certificate that can be applied to any portion of the trip. We expect to have approximately 600 eligible employees at the time of the drawing, so the chance of winning is pretty good.”

Cook notes that the University's donations help one in three people in the Boston metropolitan area through a network of services supported by the United Way. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Boston University employees to help the less fortunate members of the community who need the services of United Way more than ever,” he says. The United Way of Massachusetts Bay (UWMB) provides financial support to more than 200 health and human service agencies in 80 eastern Massachusetts cities and towns — agencies that help hold families together, treat substance abusers, assist the elderly, and engage disabled people in meaningful, satisfying activities. United Way is the second largest funder of human services in Massachusetts, after the state government.

Donations to the UWMB's Community Fund support such efforts as the Success by 6 initiative, which safeguards the health of children under age six so they can enter kindergarten ready to learn. The program provides at-risk kids with nutritious food and consistent medical care. It also supports after-school programs that teach children the skills they need to graduate from high school. Through the Keeping Kids on Track initiative, United Way agencies provide tutoring, mentoring, sports activities, and other out-of-school programs to children ages 7 to 18.

As of December 5, Boston University employees had contributed more than $149,100 to the United Way, representing 85.2 percent of BU's $175,000 campaign goal. For information on giving to the United Way, call 617-358-UWAY.
