Elizabeth Shannon, director of BU’s International Visitors Program and advisor of the Trustee Scholars Program, with Frank McCourt, author of Angela’s Ashes, the featured speaker on October 9 at the 2003 Gala Dinner at the Fairmont Copley Plaza to benefit BU’s William V. Shannon Memorial Fellowship. Every two years a dinner is held to help endow the fellowship, which funds a graduate student from Ireland attending BU for a year or more of study, and also to celebrate the memory of Shannon, U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 1977 to 1981 and later a UNI professor and a CAS professor of history. “It’s a kind of citizen diplomacy,” Shannon says about the fellowship named for her late husband. “[The students] come and have their studies, then go home with a huge network of friends and professional colleagues who will be with them for a lifetime.” Photo by Fred Sway
