All smiles behind the masks: The fourth annual William Blackstone Elementary
School field trip in June to BU’s School of Dental Medicine featured
hands-on experience as the South End school’s gowned and masked
third graders used equipment at SDM’s Simulation Learning Center.
The students found out what it was like to practice dentistry from Ron
Patel (SDM’05) and dental hygienist Diane Devlin, project coordinator
for the Metrowest School-Based Dental Health Programs, an initiative
of SDM’s Division of Community Health Programs. The children were
essentially dental students for the day and learned about a number of
topics, including dental plaque and plaque removal, healthful foods and
snacks, dental sealants, fluoride, and mouth guards. Photo by Margaret
