The 1953 creation of BU’s chapter of Psi Chi, the national psychology
honor society, did more than help the University’s top psych majors
network professionally and serve their community: it helped validate
the 15-year-old department. CAS Psychology Professor Emeritus Henry Weinberg
(CAS’41,’42) served as the chapter’s faculty advisor
from its inception until his retirement in 1990. “I remember students
back then would say to me, ‘You’re giving us so much work;
do you think we’re Harvard students?’ And I would say, ‘Yes,
you might as well be.’ That was the faculty’s attitude --
we were very serious about building up our department. I’m so proud
of how far it has come over the years.” BU’s Psi Chi chapter,
whose formation was sponsored by the famous Harvard behaviorist and Psi
Chi member B. F. Skinner, celebrated its 50th anniversary this month.
