Other BU March Madness

The postseason hopes of the men’s basketball and hockey teams remain alive, despite losses on March 16 in the title games of their respective conference tournaments.

The men’s basketball Terriers, who lost the America East championship game to Vermont, 56-55, play in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) against St. John’s on Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall in Jamaica, N.Y. The winner of that game advances to play the winner of the Brown-Virginia matchup on either Monday, March 24, or Tuesday, March 25.

BU action in the NIT can be heard in the Boston area on WRCA 1330 AM (Waltham) and WCRN 830 AM (Worcester) and on the official BU athletics Web site at www.bu.edu/athletics/webcast. WTBU, the Univer-
sity’s student radio station, will also broadcast the games at 640 AM and 89.3 FM, and on the Web at www.wtburadio.com.

The Terriers, after earning their second straight regular-season America East title, defeated New Hampshire, 75-61, on March 9 in the conference quarterfinals, and Northeastern, 71-61, the next day in the semifinals. BU’s season is extended with its third-ever NIT selection, and the Terriers are making their first-ever back-to-back postconference tournament games. In past NIT tournaments, the Terriers lost to Boston College in 1980 and to Providence in 1986, under current St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis.
The BU men’s hockey team, which lost, 1-0, in overtime to New Hampshire, is awaiting word of a seeding in the NCAA tournament. The tournament selection show will be televised on Sunday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN. The BU game in the NCAA tournament’s regional semifinal would be played at the Worcester Centrum on March 28 at 4 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.

In the Hockey East tournament, BU swept Providence, 5-4 (OT) and 8-1, in the quarterfinals on March 7 and 8, and then defeated Boston College, 6-5, in double overtime in the semifinals on March 14.
