Board of Trustees elects three new members

The BU Board of Trustees elected three new members in early January: Gerald S. J. Cassidy, founder, chairman, and CEO of the Cassidy Companies; J. Michael Schell (LAW’76), a partner at the New York law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom, LLP; and Richard C. Shipley (SMG’68, GSM’72), the chairman of the Shipley Company, L.L.C.

Gerald S. J. Cassidy
Cassidy is founder, chairman, and CEO of the Cassidy Companies, Inc., the largest integrated public affairs and government relations network in the world.

The Cassidy Companies consist of six companies: Cassidy & Associates, Inc., a government relations firm; Powell Tate, a public relations and financial communications firm; the Rhoads Maguire Group, a commerce-oriented government relations firm; SWR Worldwide, a public opinion research firm; and the Murphy Pintak Gautier Hudome Agency, Inc., an advocacy advertising and strategic consulting firm.

An article in Washingtonian magazine in January 1998 referring to the firm’s success called Cassidy a “master builder.”

J. Michael Schell
A 1976 graduate of the BU School of Law, Schell was named one of the world’s leading lawyers in his field by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers 2001-2002. Schell is a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom, LLP. With approximately 1,700 attorneys, the New York firm is one of the largest in the world.

Schell’s firm provides a broad range of legal services to the corporate, industrial, and financial communities and represents a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from small high-technology startup companies to nearly half of the Fortune 250 industrial and services corporations.

Schell concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, corporate investments, and general corporate counseling. He has extensive experience in domestic acquisitions and dispositions, both negotiated and contested.

Richard C. Shipley
Shipley, who graduated from the BU School of Management in 1968 with a B.S. in business and went on to earn his MBA, with highest honors, from the Graduate School of Management, is the chairman of the Shipley Company, L.L.C. Headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and located in key business centers around the world, the company specializes in high-performance, value-added chemicals and process technology for the electronics and surface finishing industries.

Founded in 1957 by Shipley’s parents, Charles and Lucia Shipley, the Shipley Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rohm and Haas Company, a $6.5 billion multinational chemical corporation headquartered in Philadelphia. The company employs more than 2,250 skilled professionals worldwide.
