Geshe Gundun Gyatso, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and former affiliate chaplain at BU, performs the ritual emptying of a sand mandala into the Charles River on September 19. He and Lama Dondup, another monk, built the intricate, brightly hued sand creation on Marsh Plaza to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and led Buddhist prayers for peace at the mandala for eight days. The tradition of pouring the artwork into a body of water signifies impermanence. Photo by Vernon Doucette |
