Official welcome for fast-track freshman class

Honoring a tradition that dates back a millennium, the class of 2006 assembled on September 2 in the new track and tennis center (see story right) for BU's annual Matriculation exercises. BU Chancellor John Silber advised incoming freshmen to make the most of their time at college, not merely to prepare for a career but to discover their intellectual passions.

"I hope these are going to be happy years for you, but I also hope they are going to be difficult years," he said. "If they are not difficult years, the process of discovery is not going to be as great as it would be otherwise."
With more than 4,500 members, the current freshman class is the largest in BU's history, representing 49 states and 66 countries. The class is also one of the brightest groups of newcomers, Silber added, noting that their SAT scores average 1280, which is 260 points above the national average. Fifty-six percent of the freshmen graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class, and 90 percent in the top 25 percent.

Welcoming the students on behalf of the faculty was Theo de Winter, an ENG associate professor in the department of manufacturing engineering and winner of a 2002 Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching. Sorboni Banerjee (COM'02), the student speaker at May's Commencement, presented the alumni allocution.
