Meissner
named dean ad interim at
CFA, de Quadros named director
ad interim at CFA's school of music
Chancellor John Silber announced on August 30 the appointment of Walt
Meissner (CFA'81) as dean ad interim of the College of Fine Arts. He succeeds
Jeffrey Babcock, who was appointed CFA dean last year and who announced
his resignation earlier that day.
Silber also announced the appointment of André de Quadros,
a CFA professor and chairman of the department of music education at CFA's
school of music, as director ad interim of the school of music.
Meissner, who received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M and
his MFA from CFA, has held the position of associate dean of administrative
affairs at the college since 1993 and served as acting dean from December
12, 2000, to August 1, 2001. He has been a theater manager at the BU Theatre
and for the Huntington Theatre Company.
"Walt Meissner held this position previously," said Silber,
"and is well-acquainted with the duties of the office. He has already
demonstrated his capacity to fulfill these responsibilities in an exemplary
manner."
De Quadros, who is a composer, a conductor, and an authority on music
education, received undergraduate degrees from the University of Bombay
and La Trobe University. He has several graduate degrees, in movement
and dance from the University of Melbourne, in music from the Victorian
College of the Arts, and in higher education from Monash University and
from the Universität Mozarteum. He studied violin with Adrian de
Mello, conducted with Joachim Buehler and Robert Rosen, and received a
German Academic Exchange Service scholarship. He has conducted the Moscow
State Symphony Orchestra, Prokofiev Symphony Orchestra, National Youth
Choir of Great Britain, Baden-Baden Orchestra, Shiki Daikunokai Choir
and Orchestra, and Penang State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
His invited presentations include American Orff Schulwerk Association,
World Symposium of Choral Music, Deutscher Sängerbund, and National
Choral Seminar.
"In his brief tenure as chairman of the program in music education,"
said Silber, "he has already succeeded in substantially increasing
the number of graduate and undergraduate students and has made important
advances in the redesign of the curriculum of those programs. On the basis
of the range of his experience and achievement in music, I am confident
Professor de Quadros can provide effective leadership for the school."
