Take care of your smile -- February is National Dental Health Month.
A patient opens wide for an instructor and students at BU's School of Graduate Dentistry (now the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine) in the 1960s. Goldman was founder and dean of the school -- the first of its kind in the United States to provide advanced education in the eight branches of dental science: oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, pedodontics, prosthetic dentistry, preventive dentistry, and oral pathology. Prior to the school's founding, the School of Medicine established a Department of Stomatology (the medical study of the physiology and pathology of the mouth) in 1958 -- another BU first-in-the-nation in providing postdoctoral education in dentistry. A predoctoral program leading to a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree was initiated in 1972. Photo by Peter Simon (COM'70), 1967 Hub
