A holiday party that takes the cake: The 1953 University Holiday Party centered around a 350-pound, 11-layer cake. By the 1950s, the number of faculty and staff had risen as enrollment numbers surged. President Harold Case supervised not only a massive building project that solidified the University's presence on the Charles River Campus, but also a management-team style of leadership in his staff. He created the University's first vice presidencies -- for academic affairs, administrative affairs, student affairs, University affairs, and development. J. Wendall Yeo, vice president for student affairs, saw his job "as humanizing the increasingly complex bureaucracy so students would not feel alienated and lonely." Photo by BU Photo Services
