But who was the water boy? It may look like a group organized around a secret society rather than an athletic endeavor, but the ball held in front of the gentleman sporting a top hat -- who was the team manager -- reveals that these were members of the 1884 Boston University gridiron team. Animal rights advocates need not look at the tiger rug in front of the group. At this time in the University's history, the School of Theology, the School of Law, the College of Music, the School of Medicine, the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Oratory, and the School of All Sciences (graduate school) were in existence. The majority of students worked part-time and commuted from their homes by train or the horse-drawn street railways that linked Boston with its closer suburbs. |
