Thoroughly modern millinery: While this shot of College of Practical Arts and Letters students in a Merlin House dorm room, taken in the fall of 1952, portrays a relaxed and devil-may-care atmosphere of fun and frivolity, those who lived in dorms -- especially the women -- had to abide by strict codes of conduct, found in the "Blue Book." Dorm rooms were inspected on a regular basis and graded for neatness. For classes or an after-class Coke date, the University recommended that coeds wear a blouse or sweater with a skirt and loafers or saddle shoes; for more formal occasions, a sheath dress, slim heels, clutch purse, and small hat. Obviously the coed at the foot of the bed is preparing for an upcoming formal occasion -- or perhaps setting a new trend in head-to-robe attire. Photo by BU Photo Services |
