Elma Lewis (SED'44) receives an 80th birthday gift from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino at the GSU's Metcalf Hall on September 15. Boston University, Menino, and her many friends honored Lewis for a lifetime filled with notable achievements. In 1977, she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1981 the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation elected her to the first group of MacArthur Fellows, and in 1983, President Ronald Reagan presented her with the Presidential Medal for the Arts. Lewis is the founder and artistic director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists and the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts.
