Sail on, sailors

"I joined the crew of The Alabama well into its sail, in Newport, Rhode Island," says Vernon Doucette, BU photographer. "I sailed with the students and crew to Vineyard Haven, via New Bedford." Doucette is known not just for his campus photographs, but also for pictures taken on many BU-related travels, such as last summer's sailing on The Rose, one of the tall ships, from Boston to Nova Scotia, and most recently, traveling to Ecuador in the spring with BU's Center for Ecology and Conservation Biology Tropical Ecology Program.

Students from BU and elsewhere participated in MET's summer program aboard The Alabama. Jay Halfond, dean of Metropolitan College, says of the program, "What better way to learn the history that occurred at sea than to experience firsthand what ocean-faring life must have been like in early American history?"

Braced against the heeling deck, Erika Moore (COM'02) combines sunbathing with course work.

Emily Shugarman (SED'03) (top bunk) and Jason Liardi (CAS'03) make good use of their off-watch time by catching up with course studies below deck.

Gavin Lanning (CAS'03) gets a lesson in the intricacies of splicing a line from first mate Nisa Kontse.

William Korbet (CAS'03), James Hansen (MET'02), Erika Moore (COM'02), and Mi Sung Kim (GRS'02) enjoy a well-earned moment of rest.

Hauling a line to raise the main sail are (center) Emily Shugarman (SED'03) and Matt Selmer, from California.
