On the right, Debray. Régis Debray, the 1960s radical who recently took on the French intelligentsia in its assessment of the Kosovo crisis, spoke at Boston University earlier this month and played the role of clinical pathologist. His subject was the French intellectual, and he reported that the patient is now in a terminal state, afflicted with inflationary grandiloquence, moral narcissism, chronic inaccuracy of the predictive function, and a cult of the instantaneous. Once an icon of the hard left, in recent years Debray has developed an admiration for such figures as Charles de Gaulle. Photo by Vernon Doucette |
