Paul Lewis (right), BU football's all-time leading rusher, and Sarah Maxwell (center), a former All-American Terrier field hockey player, recently wrote a letter to the BU Athletic Department requesting the donation of any exercise equipment the University could spare to Dorchester's Northeastern Family Institute (NFI) Center. Lewis (CAS'85) and Maxwell (CAS'90, GRS'93) are administrators at the center, which provides a home and schooling to about 60 teenagers who have been placed in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Social Services. The Athletic Department donated a Samson lat pull-down and row machine and a bench and squat rack, worth about $1,600, according to Glenn Harris, BU's strength and conditioning coach (left). The gift helps revamp the NFI Center's recreation room, which had featured only a few free weights. "Now our residents have a place where they can go to get in good shape, improve their spirits, and have an outlet for expressing their anger and letting off some steam," says Lewis. "A lot of the young people who come here have had poor self-esteem for a long time, and creating a fitness program is one way to help them feel better about themselves. In the future, we'd love to have BU athletes visit us occasionally and give a demonstration on how best to work out." Photo by Sarah Zenewicz |
