Nearly ten grand netted in BU online auction

By Amy E. Dean

Not only was the Boston University Athletic Association's (BUAA) first online sports auction a resounding success, but the highest bids bypassed items signed by Mario Lemieux, Dan Marino, Bobby Orr, and Pedro Martinez -- and went instead to Mike Eruzione.

A round of golf with Eruzione (SED'77), director of athletic development in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, amassed a bid of $810 per round, for each of three rounds. Proceeds from the auction, which ran from February 26 to March 2, go to the University's athletic and recreation programs as well as the Student Village project.

Michael Lynch, assistant vice president of development for athletics and student life in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, had hoped to raise $10,000 from the auction; the final tally was $9,030.

"I am thrilled with our results," Lynch says. "Our site was one of the top three visited on the University alumni Web page, with over 3,000 hits. It was a fun experience for the entire development staff. I want to thank Joel Seligman, director of strategic communications in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, and all of the information technology staff for putting together a first-class event.

"My only concern," adds Lynch, "is the overwhelming response for golf with Mike Eruzione. I've played with him, and he's not that good!"

Chris Mailloux (CAS'00), senior program coordinator in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, reports that other BU staff did well in the bidding, including Head Hockey Coach Jack Parker; an afternoon sail with him from Gloucester went for $275. Beanpot tickets for next year captured $350.

As for the pro players surpassed by Eruzione, a signed Lemieux jersey went for $525, an autographed Marino football was had for $500, Bobby Orr's signed picture of the infamous airborne score went for $300, and a baseball signed by Pedro Martinez came in at $275.
