BU women's ice hockey team: Terrier rough and tough

By Robin Shelton (COM'01, CAS'01)

While most people associate the Beanpot with men's hockey and tough competition, few realize that women play, too - and face equally tough opponents. The BU women's ice hockey team, a club sport for more than 20 years, regularly faces off against both club and varsity teams. But Beanpot rivals Northeastern, Boston College, and Harvard are by far the Terriers' toughest varsity-level opponents.

Unfortunately, the Terrier women found this out during their February 6 first-round matchup against the Huskies, which resulted in a 9-0 blowout of the Rhett dogs. Like their male counterparts, the women will fly next against the BC Eagles, in the February 13 consolation game.

Such a rout as the Northeastern game doesn't dampen the enthusiasm of the Terriers, however. The team, led by new head coach Jane Ford, has a 16-1 pre-Beanpot record and has won by some blowout scores, such as an 11-2 stomping of New England College. The team also has recorded wins against MIT, Quinnipiac University, and UConn.

"We're really excited about the Beanpot," says center Patricia Tarabelsi (CAS01). "It's a great tradition, and I love being part of it."

The Terrier women's next home game is on February 10 at noon against Bates. For more information, call 353-GOBU.
