Rock of ages: Carol Simpson, associate provost for research and graduate education and CAS earth sciences professor, holds a sample of S-C mylonite that is getting rather famous. Already featured in several publications, it will make yet another appearance, in a geology textbook by tectonics expert Myron Best. The rock, which she found on a field excursion in Palm Canyon, Calif., in the 1980s when she taught at Johns Hopkins University, "is not unique, but it's a particularly good example of a rock deformed by natural causes," she says. "The sample is from the deep part of a fault zone, and it's roughly 60 million years old." What's next for S-C mylonite? A modeling contract? Movies? Photo by Kalman Zabarsky |
