BU aims to raise $180,000 for United Way

BU's annual United Way fund-raising drive is off to a strong start this year, having raised $111,000 from 700 employees since the campaign kicked off last month. The goal for this year's drive is $180,000, the same amount collected last year.

"We're getting there," says Marie Miller, a United Way worker who is coordinating the campaign -- the largest the University undertakes for charity -- for the 13th consecutive year. "When the economy is going well, as it is, people tend to want to help those less fortunate. But it's going to be close. Raising $180,000 isn't easy. That's the most we have ever collected at BU."

The United Way of Massachusetts Bay received donations totaling $51 million last year and helped more than two million children and adults in eastern Massachusetts by assisting the elderly, feeding and sheltering the homeless, treating substance abusers, and enriching the lives of people with disabilities.

BU employees can earmark their pledge for a specific nonprofit organization, or donate to a general fund managed by the United Way. "It's the little gifts that make this thing go," says Miller. "We accept donations of any size."

Employees who donate $75 or more, however, are eligible for weekly prize drawings. Still to be given away are a $150 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, a weekend at BU's Sargent Camp, and an expense-paid vacation anywhere in the continental United States.
