Memorial

Memorial Gathering for Doug Parker: Friends, former colleagues, and family of Douglas Parker (SFA’66) listen to Bostonia’s editor at large, Jerry Hickey, pay tribute to the "patron of artists," who died of cancer in 1998. Parker was the longtime art director of Bostonia and numerous other University publications and the owner of a studio and gallery on Martha’s Vineyard. The gallery exhibited art, but nothing was sold on the property. The venue earned a reputation for encouraging local artists whose work Parker championed.

Parker came to SFA on a full scholarship in 1960, and ran the BU Union Art Gallery for several years. His freelance work included all manner of assignments, from the original Cambridge Phoenix design to the interior design of one of the first rehabilitated living spaces on the Boston waterfront.

Parker’s Vineyard Studio/Gallery sat adjacent to a three-acre garden he tended with intense care. His great love of gardening prompted Bostonia coworkers to dedicate a bench and plaque in the backyard of 10 Lenox St., the magazine’s home, to his memory.
