Teacher/Scholar of the Year
CAS Music Professor Roye Wates received the Boston University Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award at the new faculty orientation at Metcalf Hall September 9. Wates "is an outstanding scholar and teacher," said Chancellor John Silber, "someone who brings to the classroom exemplary erudition and the gifts of great teaching." Wates is pictured with President Jon Westling during the new faculty reception at his house later that afternoon. The award is sponsored by the United Methodist Church and its division of higher education. Although BU is nonsectarian, the University's origin as Methodist College in 1839 is remembered in several ways, including this award. Wates began teaching at BU in 1962 in the Department of the Humanities, became an associate professor of humanities, and then a University associate professor. She has taught at CAS since 1978.
