Gardner Read's The Prophet, a massive
composition for orchestra, chorus, vocal soloists,
and a narrator, had its world premiere at Boston's
Symphony Hall in February 1977. Based on the book
by Kahil Gibran, the work prompted Ellen Pfeifer to
write in Musical America, "Read's setting reveals a
craftsmanly hand and facile technique, as well as a
naive sensibility." Read taught at BU from 1948 to
1978 and is the subject of a display at Mugar
Library this summer entitled The Maestro at 85. He
is shown above conducting The Prophet's dress
rehearsal with the BU Symphony Orchestra and the BU
Chorus.
