Back alley to backyard. From the mid-1940s until
the early 1960s, people leaving CAS by the rear
door stepped into this uninviting scene. To the
left is one of three clusters of temporary
buildings the University purchased as war surplus
(a sign above the student's head points to a
cafeteria and to soda rooms); to the right is 270
Bay State Road. The prefab buildings and parking
spaces were replaced by the George Sherman Union,
the School of Law, and the grassy Warren Alpert
Mall, now one of the most pleasant spots on the
Charles River Campus. The landscaping was further
refined when brick walkways were laid down in 1997.
