Sharp and scrappy, women's hockey Terriers
enjoy outstanding season
By Amy Dean
"The only thing I like more than hockey is
women's hockey," says actress Susan Sarandon in a
recent issue of Women's Sports and Fitness. The
'90s has made ice hockey the latest "let-me-play"
sport for women -- think of the U.S. women's ice
hockey team's Olympic gold-medal win over Canada in
Nagano. Women ice hockey players are no longer
"chicks with sticks"; no longer do girls have to
register to play under boy's names (which the
Olympians had to do in order to get ice time).
What began as a six-member club at BU 20 years
ago has grown into a full-fledged -- albeit still
club-status -- goal-scoring unit that competes
against both club and varsity teams. "This was our
best season ever," boasts BU women's ice hockey
Head Coach Sean O'Brien (COM'91), now in his fifth
season. "We used to play all club teams. Every
year, we go up against more and more varsity teams.
This year one-third of our schedule was varsity
level." Varsity teams that BU defeated this season
are MIT (twice), Southern Maine, and Connecticut
College.
Since O'Brien was hired as part-time head coach,
he has worked hard to make the Terriers into a team
that plays hard and plays well against varsity
teams. "I've organized equipment, negotiated for
better ice time, and talked people into coming on
the team," he says. "I get three or four requests a
week for information on our program, and I follow
up with these women if they come to BU." In the
past few years, "the University has increased its
financial contribution towards the club, which is
allocated each semester," he explains. "This money
goes towards referees, buses for away games,
coaches' salaries, equipment, and the banquet for
the alumni game." BU women now also have prime home
ice time for practices and games. "The team has
improved dramatically because of it," O'Brien says.
The women have also competed in the Beanpot
Tournament against varsity teams from Harvard,
Boston College, and Northeastern. "The Beanpot for
women was started in 1979," says NU Head Coach
Heather Linstad. "Northeastern has won it fourteen
times; our longest streak was from 1984 to 1991.
Harvard has won it four times. Boston University
won it once in 1981. Boston College is the only
team that's never won it."
This year, Harvard (16-1) -- the number one team
in the nation -- beat BC (5-12-2) in the finale,
9-0, to win the Beanpot. Harvard defeated NU
(15-4-2) in a 7-6 squeaker in the first round of
play, and BC skated past BU, 9-1. BU fared poorly
against NU in the consolation game, suffering a
15-0 loss. "Obviously we played against two strong
teams," says O'Brien. "But our players never gave
up. They played with a lot of heart and a lot of
intensity. The scores really don't tell how
hard-fought the contests were."
The 15-0 Beanpot blanking at the hands of
Northeastern didn't quash the Terriers' spirit. In
fact, BU responded by winning five in a row
(outscoring opponents 44-11), and six of its last
seven games, for a final record of 16-6-2.
