Changes were already in the works when the first
of these photographs looking north on Saint Mary's
Street was taken in 1962. The rubble to the right
is the remains of an apartment building demolished
in preparation for the construction of the Mass
Turnpike Extension. That briefly vacant lot gives
us a clear view of the Beckwith Elevator Company,
demolished in turn to make way for the Photonics
Center (1997). Other changes in the 37 years that
separate the two scenes are (from left) the School
of Law tower, the installation of the Fraunhofer
Resource Center in what used to be Merry's Garage,
and the Hyatt Regency Hotel (1976) behind Marsh.
The Saint Mary's bridge is twice as long as it was
in the earlier view, spanning two railroad tracks
and six lanes of traffic. BU Photo Services /
