From Limelight to Twilight
Claire Bloom, the classic English stage actress
who has also achieved success in film and
television, reviewed her life and career at a
gathering of the Friends of the libraries at Boston
University on October 6. Bloom told the audience
that roles in the English theater canon become
fewer as an actress matures, even though her art is
stronger than ever, and that she has had to come to
the United States to find new opportunities. Some
of her career highlights, she said, were playing
the young

dancer in Charles Chaplin's last major film,
Limelight, Blanche in A Streetcar Named
Desire, and more recently, Mary Tyrone in
Long Day's Journey into Night. The actress
has given her papers to the University's Twentieth
